Treat The Symptoms. Please.
Many of the people who book a consultation and come to see me some glitch or problem in life often want me to treat the symptoms. They are not aware of that at the time however, that is what they think they want me to do. Usually after a few minutes of discussion and joking they change their minds.
Let me give you an example: Someone comes in and wants to stop smoking, a great idea. they have all the reasons and benefits worked out how much they will save how they will become healthier and all the good stuff.
So I usually ask "why do you smoke"?
"What's the benefits it gives you"?
Often and it has happened more times than you can imagine they say things like.
" It helps me to relax"
"It helps me unwind"
"It relaxes me" " Its my little reward"
" I get stressed and it helps me to handle it"
"I smoke because of the stress I am under"
All good things at least they are being actively responsible and deciding to do something to change the state they are in.
So I usually ask "OK so if I teach you how to stop smoking and make it easy and fast to do, will the stress still be there"?
"When you stop smoking how will you relax"?
The lights begin to go on.
"If you learn how to handle stress and learn to relax, if your reasons are valid, you will no longer need to smoke, will you"?
Much of what the old hypnotists did with suggestion therapy was rubbish, however some of the things they said and did was and still is wise.
Treating the symptoms in cases like the ones above will not help the client in the long term. Treat the symptoms is often a short term fix.
